Photo Friday

Last week, the boys and I day tripped our way through our annual Spring Break "Staycation." I have lots to share, but it's been difficult returning from the vacation mind set.

You might think a week on the road with two boys would make a person a little crazy, but I get to think a lot on those trips. The car is better than any chemical sleep aid for Gabe. He's asleep within the first ten miles. Matt and I have some of our best heart to hearts, but eventually, he fades out too.

And so for much of the drive it's just me, behind the wheel, humming to myself, rearranging words in my head, completely at peace.

Photo Friday

I don't know when I first fell in love with flowers.

I have early memories of sitting barefoot in our yard, wiggling my toes between cool, green blades and gathering grubby bouquets of flowering weeds for any female relatives with the misfortune of being nearby.

Once they stopped sneezing and I gained fine motor skills, I spent hours weaving and tying stems of clover to make necklaces, bracelets, rings and tiaras. The grown-ups were spared and I instead decorated myself and little sister.

By the time I read The Secret Garden in second grade, I was hooked. I loved flowers and daydreamed incessantly - of many things - but especially of my own bit of earth and the wonderful treasures I would grow.

I wrote a series of stories about little fairies who lived in a garden world. And as my interests shifted to art, I drew and painted portraits of flowers.

As an adult, I've learned I'm a much better dreamer than I am gardener. I've never achieved anything remotely like the pages of my favorite Martha Stewart garden book, much less that of my imagined fairy world, but this time of year inspires me to break out the spade and try again.

Even the flowers at Whole Foods call my name. I'm as likely to splurge on a bouquet of tulips or a fragrant bunch of peonies (my favorite) as I am to buy ice cream or cookies. The added bonus: flowers are better for the waistline.

And it's been an easy move to combine my love affair with the new camera with this lifelong love of things that bloom. Once again, flower portraits reign.

Flower photos, after all, are much easier than those of boys.

Flowers can't stick out their tongue.

Despite my recent complaints, I've enjoyed the snow we've received this winter.

My snow days were spent sledding, playing, and/or sitting in front of the fireplace watching a parade of juncos, titmice and woodpeckers outside our picture window.

To the average viewer, this isn't as pretty as the sunrise I posted Wednesday, but it sure makes me happy. Those little red shoots belong to my favorite flower: the peony.

I salvaged these particular peonies from my grandparent's farm just before it sold last fall. I wasn't sure they would come up.

So, to me, this is a sunrise.

Photo Friday with Some Love

Someone thinks it's spring.

We've still quite a bit of winter to go, but I love when the crocuses make their appearance. It means spring will be here soon.

I've been feeling a little under the weather the past two days. Not necessarily sick, just tired and chilled and having a hard time getting in the day trip mood.

The boys are with their dad and step-mom and the wind is howling outside. We're missing the blizzard that is pounding parts north, but I feel a little in blizzard mode. I just want to curl up by the fire and hunker down with my book and the cat.

I think that's what I'll do.

Photo Friday on Monday

We're exhausted. Yesterday's game wore us out!

But it's a happy exhausted - our team won and tonight we have the promise of snow.

We've  been in a pattern for about week, where small clipper systems lightly dust us with the coveted white stuff. It's a tease, but one the boys and I welcome.

Some snow is better than no snow!

Snow! Snow! Snow!
(you need to read that as if you were Bing, Rosemary and Danny singing in White Christmas)

We got our first snow yesterday (1-2 inches) and are getting another few inches tonight. Makes things pretty, don't ya think?

A couple of weeks ago I went hiking at Great Falls.  I hadn't been there since I was a child.

I was awed by the beauty and power of the Potomac.

Photo Friday

I took this photo a couple of weeks before our camping trip.  It's from Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia (4,863 feet).

A friend of mine is collecting high points the way Matt collects rocks. It's something I've thought about doing with the boys... at least on the East Coast. Can you imagine the whining if we tried to drag Gabe up Mt. McKinley?

I love this photo.  It's grainy and a little out of focus, but I think it so perfectly captures childlike awe and delight. This sort of joy is contagious.

Photo Friday: Backyard Camping

Did you know about this program?

The Great American Backyard Campout
It's a program by the National Wildlife Federation to introduce kids to camping and nature while also raising money for programs with those same objectives.

We didn't learn about it until a few days before the actual event, but thought what better way to celebrate the big guy's birthday?

Photo Friday: Ten

That smile has been turning me to goo for a decade.  I can't believe he's that old. I can't believe I ever had joy without him.

Photo Friday: Blueberry Hill

Blueberries growing in my grandparent's garden

As much I love to eat these, I also love taking their picture.  They're just so beautiful.

I've only known about High Rock for a couple of years, but it's become one of my favorite spots. I'm not sure if it's because of my fascination with the Appalachian Trail (it runs right below the rock), because of an ancestor's participation in a Civil War battle on these slopes, or because of the rock's stint as an amusement park attraction.

I suspect it has to do with views like this.

Matt took this picture of the sunrise over Annapolis with my iPhone through the rear window of our moving car.  It's rather lovely.

Jerusalem Mill, Gunpowder Falls State Park

Hurricane Irene took out power at the boys' school for most of the week.  We used one of the unexpected days off to complete our tenth park quest. We qualified for the  Rendevous!

I've been dragging this week. Chalk it up to weird, post-vacation sleep patterns, the good book I've been reading, or the fact that in two weeks, someone (we won't name who) will officially be old.  So today, I chose this photo because that pink pillow is mine and there is no place I'd rather be than curled up next to that sleeping little boy.

Photo Friday

This isn't a particularly good photo, but the image of our tent with the early morning sun coming through the trees is one of my favorite images from last weekend. I love mornings at the campsite.  At this moment, the boys were barely awake and I had a small fire crackling to make my coffee.
